How to Apply
Prep: Start with clean skin so makeup, oil and debris do not interfere with direct HOCl contact.
Apply: Spray generously over the area. For eyelids and the lash line, close your eyes and use clean fingertips to gently massage the solution along the lash line and through the lashes.
Air Dry: Allow skin to fully air dry before applying serums, moisturizers or other skincare products. HOCl is an oxidizer, so drying first helps minimize interaction with other ingredients.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does hypochlorous acid do for skin?
Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) helps reduce surface bacteria, calm redness and irritation, and support the skin’s natural healing process by keeping skin clean. It provides gentle, no-rinse cleansing for everyday facial hygiene, breakouts and reactive skin.
Can hypochlorous acid help with breakouts and acne-prone skin?
Yes. Hypochlorous acid helps reduce surface bacteria associated with breakouts while gently cleansing the skin. It can be used daily or throughout the day to help keep breakout-prone skin clean without alcohol, fragrance or additives.
How often can I use hypochlorous acid on my face?
Hypochlorous acid can be used on the face daily and multiple times throughout the day as needed. River Refresh Facial Cleanser is formulated for frequent use, including after workouts, sweating, shaving or whenever you want to refresh and cleanse your skin.
Where does hypochlorous acid fit in a skincare routine?
Apply hypochlorous acid to clean skin before serums, moisturizers or other skincare products. Allow skin to fully air dry before applying the next product. Use it morning, night or anytime throughout the day as needed.
Can hypochlorous acid be used on sensitive, irritated, eczema- or psoriasis-prone skin?
Yes. Hypochlorous acid can provide gentle cleansing for sensitive, irritated, eczema- or psoriasis-prone skin while helping keep the skin surface clean. It can support routine skin care but is not a treatment or replacement for prescribed care for eczema, psoriasis or other skin conditions.
Can hypochlorous acid be used around piercings?
Yes. Hypochlorous acid can be used to gently cleanse the skin around facial and ear piercings and help keep the area clean. Apply generously around the piercing and allow the skin to air dry—no rinsing is required.
Can men use hypochlorous acid after shaving their face, neck or head?
Yes. Hypochlorous acid can be used after shaving the face, neck or head to cleanse freshly shaved skin and help keep micro-nicks clean. Its gentle, no-rinse application also makes it easy to use throughout the day as needed.
Can hypochlorous acid be used on eyelids and the lash line?
Yes. Hypochlorous acid is used for gentle eyelid and lash-line hygiene to help reduce bacteria and buildup along the eyelid margins. Close your eyes, spray over the eyelids and lash line, and gently massage along the lash line as needed. Allow to air dry.
Can hypochlorous acid help with blepharitis or Demodex mites?
HOCl can support eyelid hygiene for blepharitis by keeping the eyelids and lash line clean and reducing bacteria and buildup. Demodex mites can contribute to some cases of blepharitis; regular eyelid hygiene helps keep the lash line clean, but HOCl does not kill Demodex mites.
Can hypochlorous acid be used with lash extensions or false lashes?
Yes. HOCl can be used to gently cleanse the eyelids and lash line while wearing lash extensions or false lashes. For best results, remove surrounding eye makeup first, close your eyes and spray over the eyelids and lashes. Use a clean fingertip to gently massage the solution along the lash line and through the lashes, then allow to air dry.

Why River Refresh
River Refresh develops fresh hypochlorous acid products for skincare, pet care, oral care and surface cleaning.
Fresh hypochlorous acid, made simple. HOCl is highly effective but sensitive to heat, light and air. Our patent-pending Activation Packet™ system lets you activate fresh HOCl when you need it—removing the uncertainty that comes with pre-mixed solutions. When you control freshness, you can trust performance.™
Custom formulation is at the core of every River Refresh product. We design concentration and pH around how each product is used rather than using one formula for every application. Our formulas use pure HOCl with no additives.
Made in Texas, USA. River—our Italian Spinone—inspired our company name and our search for a better way to care for pets, people and the environments we share. That idea still guides River Refresh today: effective, freshly activated HOCl made for everyday life and safe around families and pets.
